The U.S. Department of State says that crime in Mexico varies widely by location with the worst crime reported in the states that border the United States and the south of Mexico, mostly because of drug cartel activity.

However, you should know that one of the most powerful drug cartels in Mexico is based in the state of Sinaloa, mostly in the capital city of Culiacán. Mazatlán generally is safe, but you should be aware of pickpockets and other petty crime that thrive in resort cities.
