Guanajuato is a university town, which means there is competition for lower-cost housing. The city’s beauty and cultural attractions are also bringing more expats each year, so be prepared to sharpen your house hunting skills, if you are planning to rent a home.

If you plan to rent an apartment in Guanajuato, the good news is that prices are very reasonable. A one-bedroom unit in the center of town is about US$197. A one-bedroom apartment outside of the downtown area is about US$127. If you need more space, a three-bedroom apartment downtown is about US$452. Outside of city-center, a three-bedroom apartment usually rents for around US$331. These costs are averages and could be higher or lower, depending on the property rented.

In addition to selling homes, local real estate firms also list apartments, condos and houses for rent on their websites.

Although Guanajuato has no Multiple Listing Service (MLS), you can find apartments, condos and houses for rent or sale on the local Craigslist website.

You should also check the websites of major international real estate firms that operate in Mexico, such as Coldwell Banker, Century 21, RE/MAX and others.
