Mexico City is one of the top cities in the world for expats, ranking 11th out of 51 cities in the InterNations Expat City Ranking 2017.

Based on data from the company’s Expat Insider 2017 research, Mexico City stands out with excellent ratings for friendliness, feeling welcome, friends and socializing, as well as its cost of living. The survey ranks 51 cities on a variety of factors, including the quality of urban living, getting settled, urban work life and finance and housing, based on responses from over 13,000 expats worldwide.

Mexico City ranks 11th globally but first in Latin America, beating out its two major competitors, Santiago, Chile and São Paulo, Brazil. Mexico’s capital city ranks in the top 10 cities worldwide for local friendliness (3rd), making expats feel welcome (4th), local leisure options (5th) and climate (5th). Additionally, 73 percent of expats surveyed rate Mexico City’s cost of living positively, which is 30 percentage points higher than the global average. Other global rankings include quality of urban living index (40th), getting settled index (5th), urban work life index (25th) and finance and housing index (5th).

Not all is rosy in Mexico City, though. About four-out-of-10 expats feel unsafe living in the city and a similar number feel Mexico City is politically unstable.

Expats rank Manama, Bahrain (you know where that is, right?) #1 in this year’s survey, followed in descending order by Prague, Czech Republic; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Amsterdam, Netherlands; Barcelona, Spain; Johannesburg, South Africa; Basel, Switzerland; and, Frankfurt, Germany.

For a city to be included in the InterNations Expat City Ranking 2017, a sample size of at least 45 survey participants per city is required. The city rankings are based on 7,985 expats living in 40 countries.
